It’s no surprise that Caleb Williams, the first overall pick in the NFL draft, is already making waves. Leading the Chicago Bears to three straight wins, Williams is beginning to show why many experts believed he had the potential to turn the tide for this storied yet historically quarterback-starved franchise. The Bears, who have never seen a 4,000-yard passer or a 30-touchdown season, are now hopeful that Williams will bring long-awaited success.
Williams’ performance in the Bears' recent 35-16 win over the Jaguars in London was nothing short of remarkable. Completing 23 of 29 passes for 226 yards, throwing four touchdowns, and rushing for 56 yards, Williams delivered one of the best rookie quarterback performances we’ve seen in years. After a slow start in his first two games, Williams has now thrown nine touchdowns in the past four weeks. More notably, Chicago has scored 71 points in the last two games, the first time the team has achieved back-to-back 35-point games since 2013.
This improvement is particularly impressive considering the struggles the Bears had building a passing offense around Justin Fields in previous seasons. While they aren’t a dominant passing team yet, Williams has helped elevate the offense significantly, and this is just the beginning. His supporting cast, including veteran Keenan Allen and rookie Rome Odunze, has not even hit full stride yet.
According to Next Gen Stats, Williams has been one of the NFL’s top quarterbacks during Chicago’s current winning streak. Over the past three weeks, Williams ranks:
For context, if Williams continues at this pace, his +6.8% CPOE would lead the entire NFL. Even fellow rookie Jayden Daniels, currently leading the league, sits slightly behind at +6.4%. Williams has also been lethal with quick passes, completing 13 of 14 throws under 2.5 seconds with three touchdowns and nine first downs in Week 6.
His understanding of the quarterback position and his decision-making have been superior to any other Bears quarterback in recent history. In fact, it’s not far-fetched to say that Williams might already be the best quarterback in the Bears’ history.
If Caleb Williams can maintain this level of performance and lead the Bears to the playoffs, he could shift the narrative on what fans and analysts expect from top draft picks. Historically, many No. 1 picks, such as Trevor Lawrence, Justin Fields, and Bryce Young, have struggled to meet expectations early in their careers. But Williams, along with Jayden Daniels, is already showing that he might be the exception.
